Rules of Limit Holdem
Texas Holdem is the most popular form of poker in the world today. Many low stakes Texas Holdem games that you will find in casinos are Limit Holdem games. Let’s review the rules of Limit Holdem.
A small disk will determine the dealer position for each hand. The two players to the left of the dealer button must post forced bets known as blinds. The first player to the dealer’s left will post a small blind and the second player will post a big blind. The small blind is half a small bet. In a $2-$4 Limit Holdem game, the small blind would be $1 and the big blind would be $2.
Starting with the small blind, each player is dealt two cards. The player to the left of the big blind is first to act. This is also known as under-the-gun. The player has the option to call the big blind, raise, or fold. After the player acts, action then moves to the next player and continues around the table until it reaches the small blind. If the pot has not been raised, the small blind may either call the big blind amount, raise, or fold. After the small blind acts, action returns to the big blind. If the pot has not been raised, the big blind may either check his option or he can raise.
The big blind is the only player pre-flop, and that is only if the pot is unraised. Once a pot is raised, the other players at the table must call, raise, or fold. Raising occurs in increments of the small bet pre-flop. In most game, there is a maximum of three raises. In a $2-$4 game, the most that the pot can be raised to pre-flop is $8.
After betting is completed, three cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table to be shared by everyone. This is known as the flop. Every player at the table can use the cards in the middle with their hands to make the best five card hand. After the flop is dealt, betting begins with the small blind and continues around the table. Betting and raising on the flop occurs in the small bet amount.
After the flop betting round concludes, another card is deal face up in the middle. This is the turn. Another round of betting ensues. Betting on the turn occurs in increments of the big bet, or $4 in our example above. The same three raise rule applies to the turn and river, so the maximum the pot can be bet in the example above is $16. After this round of betting is concluded, the final community card is dealt face up. This is called the river. Betting again occurs in increments of the big bet. After betting is concluded, the remaining players show their hands. The player with the best five card hand takes the pot.
