Razz Poker Rules
Razz is a seven card stud variant where the lowest hand wins. Each player will receive seven cards, four down and three up, and the player with the worst five card hand wins. Straights and flushes do not against your hand in Razz. The rank of the card is the only consideration. Also, aces are always low in Razz. Think of an ace as a one only. As a result, a pair of aces is lower than a pair of deuces. The best hand in Razz is the wheel, or an A-2-3-4-5. Now, let’s look at the basic flow and betting structure of the game.
Cards are dealt from the one seat around to each player. There are no dealer buttons or changes of dealing positions in Razz. As a result, cards are dealt clock wise starting at one for every hand and every street. Before each hand, every player at the table posts an ante. Each player is then dealt three cards, two down and one up. This is known as Third Street. At this point, the player with the highest up card is the person who makes the bring-in bet. In the event that two players have cards of the same rank, the player with the highest suit is the bring-in. Suits from the order of lowest to highest are clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades. The king of spades is the highest card in Razz and is automatically the bring-in on third. The bring-in bet is typically double the ante. In a $2-$4 game with a 50 cent ante, the bring-in would be $1. The bring-in player also has the option to complete the bet to the full bet amount. In the case of our example, the completion would be $2. If the bring-in player does not complete the bet, then each player at the table has the option to either call the bring-in, or to complete the bet. One a bet is completed, the subsequent raising occurs at the completed bet amount.
After betting is completed on Third Street, the next card is dealt face up. This is Fourth Street. Betting begins with the player showing the lowest hand. In the event there are two or more hands of equal rank, the player closest to the dealer is first to act. The lowest hand will open betting from Fourth Street until the river. Betting and raising occurs at the small bet amount on this street. After betting is completed, another card is dealt to each player remaining. This is Fifth Street. At this point, betting doubles. In the $2-$4 example above, the betting would now be in $4 increments. Betting will remain at the big bet amount until showdown. After Fifth Street, the last up card is dealt on Sixth Street. Another betting round occurs and then Seventh Street is dealt face down. This is also referred to as the river. One last round of betting occurs and the remaining players show their hands. The player with the worst five card hand is the winner.
