Rules of Seven Card Stud
Rules of Seven Card Stud
Seven Card Stud is one of the oldest forms of poker on the planet. For many, Stud is one of the first poker games players learn while they are growing up. However, many players that have taken up poker since 2003 WSOP do not know where to start. Let’s briefly review the rules of Seven Card Stud, also known as Stud Hi.
The object of Stud is to make the best 5 card hand. In most games, players post an ante before a hand is dealt. Each player is then dealt three cards, two down and one face up. The player showing the lowest card then has to make a forced bet known as the bring-in. The bring-in is typically twice the ante. In a $3-$6 Stud game with a 50 cent ante, the bring-in is $1. If more than one player has the lowest rank card, the player with the lowest suit must bring in the bet. Suits in rank from lowest to highest are clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades. The two of clubs is automatically the bring-in when dealt on Third Street. A bring-in player also has the option to complete the bet to the small bet amount. In the example above, the player can complete the bet to $3. If the bring-in bettor does not complete the bet, then next player has the option to either call the bet or complete the bet. Once a bet is completed, subsequent betting occurs in the amount of the small bet.
After the first betting round, the next card is dealt face up. This is known as Fourth Street. The player showing the highest hand at this point opens the betting. One rule of note, players may make a double bet on Fourth Street. The double bet is equivalent to the big bet amount. If a player does not double bet on fourth, any player at the table may bet or raise in the double bet amount. For example, if you bet $3 with an open pair on fourth, your opponent may raise to $9. This is a $6 raise. Once a double bet or raise has been made, subsequent raising must be made in the double bet amount. If you raise from $9 to $9, the next player cannot raise to $12. The must raise to $15. Fourth Street is the only street where you may use the double bet option.
After Fourth Street betting, players are dealt a third card face up. This is Fifth Street. All betting from Fifth Street until showdown occurs in the big bet amount. After betting is completed on Fifth Street, a four card is dealt face up. This is Sixth Street. After betting is completed on sixth, the last card is dealt to players face down. This is Seventh Street, also known as the river. The player that opened betting on Sixth Street also opens betting on the river. After the last round of betting concludes, players show their hands. The player holding the best 5 card hand takes the pot.
