Doyle Brunson Bio
Doyle Brunson is as recognizable a name in the world of poker as Michael Jordan is in golf or Babe Ruth in baseball. He is considered by many to be the greatest poker player of all time. For many poker players, Brunson is recognized for his ability in the game of No Limit Texas Holdem. He helped pen the bible of poker, Super System, and the follow-up, Super System 2. While he is known for his Texas Holdem Poker prowess, many people do not realize that Doyle is a champion in all forms of poker.
While everyone knows about Brunson’s back to back Main Event titles in the 70’s, many do not know that only half of his 10 bracelet’s are in Texas Holdem. His very first bracelet was in 2-7 Lowball in 1976, which is the same year he won his first Main Event. The next year, before becoming only the 2nd two time Main Event Champion, he won a bracelet in Stud 8 or Better. In 1978, he won a Seven Card Stud bracelet. In 1998, he won a bracelet in Razz. His 9th bracelet came in 2003, when he took down the $2,000 H.O.R.S.E. event.
Brunson has 15 total final table appearances at the World Series of Poker. Among those final tables are strong finishes in Ace to Five Lowball, Pot Limit Omaha, and even Chinese Poker. Brunson also made the final table of the first ever $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event in 2006 where he finished 8th.
Brunson is also one of the few poker players in the world that can claim a Chinese Poker World Championship to his resume. He took down the title at the 1994 Hall of Fame Poker Classic. Back then, there were very few tournaments on the circuit, and the Hall of Fame Poker Classic was one of the most prestigious titles in poker. Brunson is also an accomplished lowball player. Besides, his WSOP finishes, he has three final tables, including one win, at the Amarillo Slim Super Bowl of Poker. The Super Bowl of Poker was 2nd only to the WSOP in the years of its existence.
Of course, tournaments are not the only place where Brunson shines in mixed games. The Big Game in Las Vegas is a regularly rotating game that includes every game regularly spread in most casinos and up to a dozen more. Some of these games include Badugi, Lowball, Draw, Stud High Low Split regular, and more. Brunson has been a regular in the game for many years and has been a consistent winner.
Doyle Brunson is now 75 years old and many are saying that he is beginning to show signs of finally slowing down. Howard Lederer recently made a fantastic statement about Doyle’s “slowdown.” He said that saying Doyle slowing down is much like saying Michael Jordan has lost a step. Of course, Jordan is still better than probably 75% of the basketball players on earth. The same can be said of Brunson. While he may be slowing down due to age, his lifetime of experience still gives him an edge over most of the players in the poker world today.
